San Francesc
Wild, Romantic and Unspoilt
To call San Francesc the “capital of the island” would be by far too exaggerating although it is the administrative centre and seat of such central public services like the police station and post office. However, in its character it has remained the peaceful and unhasty village with its narrow streets and low buildings it has always been. The Placa de sa Constitutició with its fortified church built in 1726, the strong walls and mighty canons of which once protected the residents against the raids of Moorish and Turkish pirates, forms the village centre.

From the south-western outskirts the ca. 10 km long wedge-shaped Cap de Barbària, a quiet and pristine landscape of austere beauty, red brown fields, huge fig trees and white Fincas stretches to the „wild romantic“ steep coast with the Far de Barbària lighthouse. There the rocks plunge almost vertically some 100 m down to the sea and provide for an impressive view over the cliffs – in good weather, you can allegedly even see the African coast which is 200 km away. There is presumably no better place on the whole island to enjoy the sun setting over the sea.
